Innovation and business models in wireless sensors networks were explored in depth. This academic research was performed with a high degree of autonomy. With coaching from the Institute’s director, I developed four new wireless devices. Team-work prototyping and commercialising these devices is planned to commence in April, 2007.

Recruitment was based on successful development of a business education conference for high school students. The internship aimed to engage university students in entrepreneurship education. This required marketing, event management, graphic design, technical support and coordination of student activities.

Overcoming the challenge of supervising staff members who were all at least ten years my senior, I began to understand key aspects of small business management. I soon mastered all the duties required of the store manager such as payroll, electronic ordering and task delegation.

This role was originally a customer service and sales position. As well as serving customers and operating an electronic cash terminal, this role involved receiving, stacking and ticketing stock. With the position of assistant manager vacant, I was chosen to take on back office tasks such as inventory management and basic account keeping. Efficiency and quick learning in this role led to a promotion to Second-in-Charge.

This role involved picking and packing orders of wholesale foods. With efficiency and accuracy of chief importance I worked hard to achieve bonuses. Outside of dispatch hours, I led housekeeping and stocktaking projects.

This role required intense sales techniques. Even so, I kept guests happy while still returning high revenues for the business. The key skills developed were float control, salesmanship and dealing with aggressive customers.

As an enthusiastic member of the merchandise team, this role involved designing and building displays as well as price and security tagging. Although customer service was not officially part of this role, I made sure to answer all customers’ questions correctly.

This role developed a range of skills such as Microsoft Office proficiency, rapid data entry, and effective graphic design. I was quickly trusted to fully coordinate the distribution of training materials for the entire meat industry.

As the weekend receptionist I was introduced to a range of administrative tasks. These included filing of medical records, running errands, handling Medicare transactions, answering calls, and looking after patients.
